The Adelphi Theatre is a circa 1500-seat theatre in the West End of London. First called The Sans Pareil opening 27th November 1806 before changing its name to Adelphi in 1819. In 1858 the theatre was replaced by a more up to date building now called New Adelphi and then Royal Adelphi in 1867. Re designed in 1930 by Ernest Schaufelberg.
It was founded in 1806 as the Sans Pareil ("Without Compare"). In 1819 it took on its present name, which came from the name of a block of 24 unified neoclassical terrace houses occupying the land between The Strand and the River Thames which had been built by the Adam brothers (Greek: adelphoi, "brothers"). The present building is the fourth on the site.
An actor who performed there regularly in the latter half of the nineteenth century, William Terriss, was stabbed to death on the 16th of December 1897 as recorded on a plaque on the wall by the stage door. Outside a neighbouring pub, a sign says that the killer was one of the theatre's stage hands but many people claim that it was a jealous actor who committed the deed. It has been said that his ghost haunts the theatre.
The 1998 video of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats was recorded at the theatre.
Between 1997 and April 2006 the venue was the setting for the popular musical Chicago. This production vacated the theatre on 22 April 2006, transferring to the Cambridge, to make way for Michael Grandage's new production of Lloyd Webber's Evita which started previews on the 2nd of June 2006.
